I moved from CO to NM. Authority Movers is only the sales arm, the "brokers." You won't know who the movers are until they show up. My first hiccup was when, three days before the move, Authority bumped up the price $1500 for my additional patio furniture. Then, they tried to come get my things 48 hours ahead of my scheduled time, and tried to make me feel guilty when I declined because I literally wasn't ready. "Well my guys are close by." "Not my problem," I replied, but I could tell he was mad at me because his guys were going to be on the road and not working. When the movers did arrive they tried to bump up the price another $2,000 saying "You have a lot of stuff, more than what they can estimate over the phone." I walked through the house pointing out every piece on the list and told them they could leave immediately if they thought I would pay more. Then I had to speak to the manager (the one who didn't like me already) and tell him I wouldn't pay him one dime more than the estimate. The guys moving, though very nice, did not use a padded hand truck when moving fragile antiques (or any of the furniture) and thus damaged several valuable items. They were also upset when they found out I had an attic (I had told the "broker" this and was assured this was fine, no extra cost). The contract from Authority Movers says they will provide you with a detailed inventory of items and their condition. They do not. They didn't have a receipt book, so he kind of just created one, which, when you're handing over cash (this is the only form of payment, other than a postal money order) feels very sloppy and unprofessional. It all felt unbelievably careless. Definitely don't "book" through Authority. Go with a reputable company, or better yet, do it yourself. I wish I had done that. I would have saved thousands of dollars and my stuff would have been in much better condition. Moving 'brokers' and the moving business in general is a racket. It's all about time and volume and trying preying on your situation. Worse than buying a used car. Seriously an awful experience during an already stressful time.
