I’d used Specialty Mobile Systems (SMS) to transport my car from NY to CA in March of this year. Pick-up and delivery times were good, and my car arrived in the same good condition that it was in. The contact person, Amy Matthews, was really helpful.

Last month, when I needed to move it back from CA to NY, I called SMS again, hoping that as a repeat customer, I’d get a better quote than I did before, which was $995, including $195 deposit charged when a carrier is assigned.

SMS gave me the same price, so I called around. I did find one company that quoted $825, but the pick-up window was 1-10 days, and they couldn't give me a window for the end of Thanksgiving week. (If I wanted a 1-4 day window, I’d have to pay an extra $300.) Otherwise, the earliest the company could pick up my car was after Thanksgiving. Since I wanted to spend it with my family, that just wouldn’t work for me, so I called Amy at SMS again and booked with them.

SMS (its carrier, rather) picked up my car the day before Thanksgiving (Wed 11/25), and I got it 12 days after that (Mon 12/7). Again, the car was in great condition.

I just have two complaints about this transport. This time, the interior of the car, especially in the back, smelled like cigarette smoke. I called Amy to tell her that, and she said that it was “not acceptable” and that she'd call the carrier and look into it. I hope whatever happened gets taken care of so this never happens again to me or to anyone else.

I'd advise everyone to examine not only the exterior of the car when it’s delivered at your destination, but also the interior as well.

My other complaint, an annoyance really, since it didn’t affect me as much as it could have, is that when my car arrived, it looked really disgusting, as if someone had splashed muddy, greasy water all over the windows. I understand that the car was on an open carrier and that winter weather across the US has been mean.

It was just an unpleasant surprise, because when I got my car shipped from NY to CA in March, it arrived only little dusty all over, but this time, from CA to NY, I could barely see out the rear window to back my car up into a parking spot. The sideview mirrors were equally disgusting. It’s a good thing I had some Windex in the car. I used it to clean the sideview mirrors so I could get to the car wash safely (and it’s a good thing there’s a car wash just down the block).

I’d also advise everyone to bring some Windex with you when you get your car delivered, because you might need to clean it a little before you can safely drive off, even to a car wash.

But all in all, I’d still recommend Specialty Mobile. They picked up my car at a reasonable price when no one else would or could (for the price, and for the time frame). And the customer service is really commendable. Amy answered all of my questions the first time I shipped with them, and this time, after my car was delivered, I got an email and a call from them, asking how my own personal move was and how my car’s move went. It’s rare to see this kind of customer service anywhere.
