After reading a number of horror stories posted by the unhappy customers of several brokers, I was apprehensive about shipping my mother's car cross-country. Also, once I provided my contact and desired shipment info to a website offering to provide 8 bids, I was deluged with 30-40 bids. However, after a few hours of study, I felt sufficiently informed as to the problems I might encounter.

I ultimately chose Mercury Auto Transport, LLC because, even though there were some negative reviews, the company had taken the time to state their side of each case and, in so doing, provided me a better understanding of the ins-and-outs of the auto shipping process. Many of the cutomer complaints centered around time of pickup/delivery. That is, the customer was on a very tight schedule which (in my experience) always spells disaster. Even the slightest deviation from too rigid of a schedule can cause everything to fall apart. While my shipment went very smoothly and on-time, I was prepared to accomodate delays on either end. I would recommend that anyone planning to utilize this service, allow for flexibility around time of pick-up and delivery.

As for price, I thought it quite fair. The initial bid was for $800. Then Sam gave me a $50 military discount off of his $200 fee. However, the driver required an additional $50 to take the job. I didn't quibble over the $50 as many of the bids I received were for much more. Also, I was charged an additional $20 for using my credit card for payment. I did not find that unreasonable as the credit card company likely stuck them for more than that.

A few other compliments: Sam Golden did an exceptional job as agent and the folks at the transport facility here in Chesapeake were very nice.
