We booked our transport from New York City to Washington very early on, July 8th to be scheduled for pick up no later than August 9th. I informed the representative that we would be willing to drop off our vehicle outside of New York City because we are aware that getting a truck in to the city is difficult and expensive for a driver. We were assured that it is a door to door service and I reiterated that we were willing to meet the driver outside of the city again.
Either way, we booked a door to door service for pick up over 1-month from the booking date. We figured that was more than enough time to assign a driver to our route, etc. I called 2-weeks prior to the requested pick up date and Stephanie (our representative) informed me that once a driver is assigned to our route we will get a call. I found it odd that a driver hadn't been assigned to our route 2-weeks prior to the requested pick up date but Stephanie told me that this is how it works and I'd get a call about 1-week before the date.
About 5-days before the move date I sent an email to Stephanie asking if everything was on schedule. I did not get a response. I called and left a message, no response.
Four days before our requested move date, Trevin (another Magic Carpet representative, who is a pleasure to work with and genuinely seems to want to help) called me and said we can have a driver to you to pick up in the next 48 hours. When I informed Trevin that we were out of town and couldn't meet the driver in 48 hours, he informed me that this was the only window of opportunity to get our car on a truck out to Washington. Of course, I asked him what happens in 4-days when our car is supposed to be on a truck? He said he would have to work really hard through the weekend to make that happen. In Trevin's defense, he is not our sales representative and seems to have been literally jumping through hoops to make this happen. Trevin even sent me the name and number of the supervisor I should contact regarding Stephanie.
When I called Michelle (Stephanie's supervisor), I informed her of our issue and was repeatedly cut off by her asking me what I want to do. She was more willing to cancel our reservation than actually help. She didn't understand that by this time I had no faith or time left to deal with this situation. She asked if we could leave the car parked somewhere but didn't specify how long that would take and if that would actually happen this time. In the end I canceled our order with them.
If you decide to use Magic Carpet for whatever reason, be aware that they are a broker. While that's not a bad thing, they don't seem to know their drivers or know the trucking industry well enough to make educated comments. Stephanie never replied to an email or phone message and I was told that she was on vacation (apparently the longest vacation in history). Michelle was rude and unsympathetic to her customer's concerns. Trevin was helpful and knowledgeable, in the end I wished I got him as our sales representative from the start. This would have turned out much different. Personally, I would go with an owner/operator who is familiar with the route you're driving on. I contacted our car dealership and got a recommendation from them but unfortunately with the time constraints the price was too much.
Now we're scrambling to find an auto transport company and if we don't I may end up having to drive our car almost 3000 miles in the next 4-days. Joy.
