Too big to care about customer care

I went through the Harley Website to ship a bike I purchased on EBay. The company that they apparently use is DAS. They were very quick to make a good value quote and were very friendly up front. They have a timeline of 10-16 days for delivery. I was quite satisfied with the terms and paid (as required) in full upon setting up the pickup.

When I got my confirmation, the timeline instantly changed from a 10-16 day delivery period to 25 days. They picked up the bike within 7 days (day 6) and it sat 'somewhere' at the city of origin for two weeks with no update on their 'computer satillite tracking' site.

At the one week mark I wrote customer service three times, called several times (with over 35 mintutes hold times before I gave up) and was never contacted about the status. I understand that businesses can't call back all the fanatical customers about the minute by minute status of their shipping items, but my contract was breached, I got no explanation for the extra week or more for delivery. I felt left out in the dark. No explanations, no status update, my requests for contact were ignored.

When you are dealing with an apparently large business like DAS (and you pay up front), you're rights/expectations are not important. You have no means of recourse. They have your money, they have your property and don't seem to care what you have to say.

Apparently when you deal with such a large business, bad public relations do not affect them very much because of the volume that they ship. They are a big business and when things don't go right (drastically late shipment, or damaged vehicle) they do not have good customer service to smooth things over. I would have been happy with someone simply contacting me and updating me to assure my shipping status. Instead, I was ignored, ignored, ignored.

I am still waiting for delivery and can only hope that goes better (if it ever arrives).

My opinion is to go with a smaller shipping company because they thrive on each individual delivery and poor public relations will lead to their business failure. When you get too big, customer service goes out the window to maximize profit.

I am disappointed with my choice with DAS.
